Fintech awards

Fintech awards are now commonplace in the business awards market place. In this article, Thomas Paton discusses the growth of the fintech sector and the concomitant increase in credible fintech awards.

You’ve undoubtedly heard the word ‘fintech’ – a portmanteau of ‘financial’ and ‘technology’ – but did you know that fintech is the fastest-growing sector for UK-based start-ups? In this article I’ll be examining the global fintech phenomenon, as well as asking whether there has been a proportionate reaction from the international business awards market, that is, are the established schemes offering product, service and whole-company categories that recognise fintech excellence? To avoid unnecessary suspense, the good news is that I’ve been able to compile a list of international fintech awards that are both credible and winnable. Read on to learn more!

The rapid growth in fintech

Between 2018 and 2021, the global fintech sector will supposedly experience an average yearly growth rate of 80%. This eye-catching statistic was first published in Finance for Fintech (2018), a white paper commissioned by The London Stock Exchange that surveyed more that 400 fintech executives from across the globe. As well as painting an enthralling picture of the fintech market place – i.e., demonstrating those countries seeing the most prodigious growth (Germany and UK) and charting the yearly increases of VC investment in fintech start-ups ($14.2B in 2017) – the report also pinpoints several factors that explain why fintech has become such a hive of investment opportunity. Disruptive business models, regulatory amendments and increased customer demand are all cited as turbocharging development within financial services. Since the introduction of Open Banking in 2018, to take a regulatory example, many enterprising B2C businesses have exploited relaxed legislation by integrating banking feeds with novel software applications, much to the delight of customers crying out for smart, web-based banking services. Beyond regulation, though, by far the most radically transformative element within fintech is technological advancement. Enhanced identity management, automation, blockchain and natural language search are just a few domains that are assuring fintech’s rapid, revolutionary change.

Critically, these technological advancements are not merely inventive for their own sake; rather, they have untold application when it comes to improving efficiency, reducing costs, tightening security and forging businesses that are both strikingly agile and intrinsically adaptive. Taken individually, each of these attributes would be enough to pique the interest of venture capitalists from Mumbai to San Francisco; combine them in a single company offering, though, and you can see why some fintech start-ups are seeing annual growth rates of 350%.

Fintech awards and business awards

The international awards market is highly receptive to changes in the business landscape, whether those changes are cultural, regulatory or technological. Unsurprisingly, long-established FS award schemes are now alert to the growing fintech trend and are starting to incorporate dedicated categories into their schemes.

If you, your company or your wider team are looking to gain recognition for a fintech product or service, simply read on to explore our handpicked list of the best fintech awards to enter in 2020/21 or contact Boost for help entering (for ease, we have divided the list by region).

Financial services awards

Overall, the answer to this article’s titular question is a resounding yes, there most certainly are credible fintech awards out there, and many of them are eminently winnable, offering companies great opportunities for recognition and exposure. The lists given above are intended to demonstrate that fintech companies with innovative products and services have numerous options when it comes to matching their story with the categories offered by fintech-specific awards. Having said this, the fintech awards we’ve highlighted are by no means an exhaustive overview of the awards available to fintech companies. In fact, financial services is one of the largest sub-sections of the awards market place and, as well as considering fintech-specific awards, fintech companies would be wise to investigate general financial services awards (both UK-based and international) to see whether they meet the criteria and requirements of general FS award schemes, and thereby stand a good chance of taking home the top prize.
