Leadership Excellence Awards

As award experts with decades of combined experience, it’s incredibly rare for us to encounter a business award that either surprises us or promises to offer something truly unique.

With The Leadership Excellence Awards (by GDS), however, we can confidently say that this is a business award unlike any other – not only in terms of the fact that it tears up the rule book in a novel and exciting way, but also because The Leadership Excellence Awards has been designed with the specific goal of recognising C-suite executives, a group which has, surprisingly, been historically under-represented in the world of business awards.

Here’s five more reasons why the Leadership Excellence Awards is an unique and exciting awards prospect, and one that’s well worth considering:

Calling all senior leaders

At its core, The Leadership Excellence Awards has been designed to attract and recognise exemplary work being done by senior leaders in large organisations around the world. Put simply, the scheme is targeting individuals who have both considerable responsibility within their organisation and who can point to significant achievements they have delivered over the last 12 months. And this, frankly, is what makes the scheme so unusual – to our knowledge, there are no other international award schemes with this focus or target demographic. True, there are plenty of awards that target entrepreneurs or even specific industries, but this is different. Overwhelmingly, we think that The Leadership Excellence has discovered a major gap in the awards market, and could well be ‘one to watch’ for the future.

Multiple ceremonies

The Leadership Excellence Awards is not a conventional single-event ceremony.

As GDS Group (the company being the scheme) runs multiple summits throughout the year, it makes sense for awards to be presented at the summits that are best-aligned with each particular category name (see later for details). For instance, the CIO of the Year (Europe) Award will be presented at the CIO Insight Europe event. Unusual, but we can’t argue with the logic here. Those entering are encouraged to attend the summits, but attendance is not mandatory and will not influence the judging.

Credibility

As is befitting of an award trying to attract high-performing individuals, The Leadership Excellence Awards has, from its inception, been designed according to the best practice guidelines set out by the Independent Awards Standards Council, thereby ensuring that the scheme adheres to the code of conduct associated with the Awards Trust Mark (a not-for-profit accreditation scheme aimed at promoting best practice in the awards industry).

Recognising excellence (and how you can gain recognition)

Unsurprisingly, the scoring system for The Leadership Excellence Awards is exactly what you would expect given the name of the scheme. Judges will be looking for all kinds of leadership excellence, including:

  • Leaders who have transformed their functions
  • Leaders who have delivered improved business outcomes
  • Leaders who have masterminded lucrative innovation
  • Leaders who have achieved excellence responsibly.

Additionally, in order to ensure that the most deserving individuals are rewarded, a truly independent judging panel of industry experts has been assembled. This means that the judges can be relied upon to recognise truly remarkable work when they see it, because they will understand your industry as well as you do.

Multiple winners per category

In another positive deviation from the norm, The Leadership Excellence Awards recognises three winners per category (gold, silver and bronze). In effect, this means there will be multiple winners at each award summit, a feature which we feel more schemes should take note of and ultimately adopt, as it allows more entrants to feel great about what they’ve accomplished and silver and bronze medals still count as a win, whereas conventional shortlistings carry a little less prestige.

Deadlines

A number of entry deadlines are pretty imminent, so we recommend contacting the organisers as soon as possible if you know someone worthy of recognition here:

  • CIO of the Year – Europe (Deadline: 23 October 2020)
  • HR Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 23 October 2020)
  • Digital Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 30 October 2020)
  • Omnichannel Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 06 November 2020)
  • Banking Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 06 November 2020)
  • Digital Marketing Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 27 November 2020)
  • Healthcare Leader of the Year – North America (Deadline: 27 November 2020)

The categories

There are seven categories available to enter for recognised C-Suite (or equivalent) leaders who are most deserving of recognition for delivering real value through innovation, doing the right thing and improving outcomes for their organisations in Europe and North America.

CIO of the Year – Europe

This award will recognise outstanding C-Suite (or equivalent) executives who can demonstrate exemplary leadership through real-world achievements in their field. Judges are particularly interested in seeing evidence of the application of innovative technologies or strategies over the last 12 months that have led to increased compliance and information security, as well as evidence of improved business performance and operational efficiencies.

HR Leader of the Year – North America

This award seeks to recognise any HR executive who has made an exceptional contribution to their organisation over the last 12 months. The HR Leader of the Year will be someone who has embraced the increasingly strategic role of HR professionals in order to deliver people-focused improvements. Judges will be rewarding concrete examples of strategic, financial and operational achievements, as well as improvements in employee retention, pride and loyalty.

“The awards run alongside a series of summits which those entering are encouraged to attend (although attendance is not mandatory and will not influence the judging). As well as providing a forum to learn from peers about how they are approaching common challenges and opportunities, each summit will host an award ceremony at the end of the agenda, giving outstanding individuals the chance to be recognised for their achievements.”

Digital Leader of the Year – North America

This award seeks to recognise any Digital executive who has accomplished significant transformative change within or across industries in the last 12 months. Judges will be looking for clear and robust evidence of performance improvements delivered via solutions, campaigns or initiatives that have digital technologies at their heart.

Omnichannel Leader of the Year – North America

This award will seek to recognise any Omnichannel retail professional who has made a significant contribution to their organisation over the last 12 months. Judges are looking for examples of cross-channel innovation between traditional brick-and-mortar stores and ecommerce platforms, as well as concrete examples of not only how this individual has driven improved business performance, but has also blazed a trail for other individuals in this space.

Banking Leader of the Year – North America

This award will recognise any Banking professional who has made a significant contribution to their organisation over the last 12 months. Judges are particularly interested in seeing evidence of how entrants have remained responsive to political and social issues, as well as more conventional macro and micro-economic circumstances. Evidence of robust leadership, strategic expertise and improved business performance is essential.

Digital Marketing Leader of the Year – North America

This award will recognise any Digital Marketing professional who has made a significant contribution to their organisation over the last 12 months. Judges are particularly interested to see examples of how individuals have shown outstanding leadership to utilise new digital channels or (combine existing channels in novel ways) to improve targeting, maximise reach, increase brand penetration and awareness, and ultimately contribute to the bottom-line.

Healthcare Leader of the Year – North America

This award will recognise any Healthcare professional who has made a significant contribution to their organisation over the last 12 months. Judges are looking for any and all examples of ways in which individuals are improving health awareness, contributing to guidelines and regulatory frameworks, introducing cost-saving strategies at local and/or regional levels, improving operational efficiencies, protecting staff, leading on ‘Covid-security’, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
